It's cold-rolled steel dipped in a molten bath of aluminum, zinc, and a pinch of silicon. The coating mix works out to about 55% aluminum, 43.4% zinc, and 1.6% silicon. The aluminum does the heavy lifting on corrosion resistance—it forms a tough oxide layer that keeps moisture out. The zinc plays a different role: it's sacrificial, meaning it corrodes first if the coating gets scratched, protecting the steel underneath. Silicon? That's there to make sure the coating bonds properly to the base metal during the dipping process. GI, GL, or ZAM—how do you choose?

Here's the blunt take. GI is your budget option. It works fine for indoor or mild outdoor use, and it's been the industry standard for decades. GL is the step-up—more corrosion protection, better heat tolerance, and still reasonably priced. It's the sweet spot for most exterior building applications. Then you've got ZAM, which adds magnesium into the mix. That small change makes a big difference at cut edges and damaged spots—self-healing is the buzzword—so ZAM shines in coastal zones, industrial pollution areas, or any project where maintenance is expensive and you need maximum lifespan. Don't just look at the price per ton. That's rookie stuff. Figure out the total cost over the life of the project. A cheaper coil might save you money today but cost you a roof replacement in five years. Labor, downtime, replacement materials—those add up fast. Also, keep in mind that GL's coating is harder than GI's, so it wears tooling a bit more in stamping and punching. Welding needs slightly different settings too. None of that is a dealbreaker, but it's stuff you want to know going in.
